Among the development goals set by the King was the idea of economic self-reliance and what he nicknamed "Gross National Happiness"(GNH). GNH is not a simple appraisal of the smiles on the faces of the population; rather it has explicit criteria to measure development projects and progress in terms of society's greater good. A more sustainable happiness for the individual is believed to come from this approach.
The six development goals expressed by the King are: self-reliance, sustainability, efficiency and development of the private sector, people's participation and decentralization, human resource development, and finally regionally balanced development.
After 101 years of monarchy, the King this year moved the country from an absolute monarchy to an elected democratic-constitutional legislative process with a prime minister.
The United States could sure use some of this GNH instead Gross National Product(GNP) that stresses out the average American over economics and just makes the major corporations and a few individuals wealthy at the expense of a declining middle class and an increased number of poor people. GNH is refreshing. Let's try to use this concept in our own backyards.
