Red robed Buddhist monks and nuns, young and old, in deep prayer walk around one of holiest and largest stupa in the world in huge numbers. The most devote pilgrams prostrate(bow, then extend the full body on the ground with hands above the shoulders and protected by a leather covers) to earn merits for life after death. It is a morning and nightly ritual with huge pray wheels spinning, while prayers, chants and musical instruments sounds seep out from the surrounding monasteries in solemn devotion to Buddha. Around the stupa are a Tibetan medical center, enlightenment and Buddha stores, and countless Thankga schools offering mandalas. It is a spiritual atmosphere.
The stupa is generally acknowledged to be one of the most important Buddhist monuments outside of Tibet. This is the little Tibet(Boudha) part of Kathmandu. Since 1959, when the Chinese invaded Tibet, many Tibet exiles fled to this spot.
The back streets are like being part of daily life in Tibet. On the distant large hill sits the biggest monastary in Nepal. It is world away from downtown Kathmandu.
