The poverty of Tanzania

Sadness creeps into my heart as I watch the daily struggle for survival of the Tanzanian people. Tanzania is rated third from the bottom in poverty terms of the over 50 countries within the Africa continent. About 10% of the population seems to make money comparable to Western standards, but 90% of the people do the daily money dance for food, a child's education, the monthly rent, and health care. There are few pensions(except government) and no health care coverage. Minimal wage is $1.50 an hour, although, few employers honor it. I met one women working 16 hours a day in a first class hotel as both a receptionist and waitress making about 50 cents an hour. Average wages are $100-$200 a month and it is simply not enough to cover the monthly bills. Teachers makes $200-$300 a month. And, there is 50% unemployment! So, workers have few rights and protections in a society where employers dictate the terms, conditions and wages of work. Most of the population of Tanzania still lives in stick houses with mud/dung walls and mud floors. Sadness creeps into my heart when I see it. But after visiting many small villages the dignity, friendliness and spirit of the people gives me hope.
